Buying
How do I buy something?
Browse the shop, add an item to your cart, and proceed to checkout. You'll need a free account to complete a purchase. Checkout takes a few minutes — enter your shipping address, choose a shipping option, and pay with a credit or debit card or PayPal.
Do I need an account to buy?
Yes. A free buyer account lets you track orders, message sellers, and access our buyer protections. Creating one takes under a minute.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and PayPal. We do not accept checks, money orders, wire transfers, or cash. All payments go through our secure checkout — never directly to sellers.
Is it safe to enter my card details?
Yes. Card payments are handled by Stripe, which is certified at PCI DSS Level 1 — the highest level of payment card security. We never see or store your card number.
Can I message a seller before buying?
Yes. Use the "Message Seller" button on any listing to ask questions. Sellers are expected to respond within 48 hours.
How do I know if an item is authentic?
Sellers are required to accurately represent every item they list, including brand, scale, condition, and any defects. Listing a counterfeit item as genuine violates our policies. If you receive something that isn't what was described, you can open a Case for a full refund.
What condition ratings do sellers use?
Sellers describe condition in their listing text. Look for terms like New, Like New, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, and For Parts / Not Working. For model trains specifically, sellers may also use the traditional C-1 through C-10 hobby grading scale (C-10 = mint, C-1 = heavily worn). When in doubt, ask the seller for more photos before purchasing.
Shipping & Delivery
How is shipping calculated?
Shipping rates are calculated in real time at checkout using Shippo, based on the item's weight and dimensions and your delivery address. You'll see the exact cost before you confirm your order.
How long does shipping take?
Sellers are required to ship within 3 business days of the sale date. Transit time depends on the shipping option chosen at checkout — typically 2–7 business days for domestic orders. Economy options may take longer. See our Delivery page for more detail.
Will I get a tracking number?
Yes. Sellers are required to provide tracking when they mark an order as shipped. You'll receive a shipping notification with your tracking number.
My package shows as delivered but I didn't receive it. What do I do?
First, check with other members of your household and any shared mailroom or lobby areas. Then contact the carrier to initiate a trace. If the issue is still unresolved, contact us at support@buyhappythings.com to open a Case.
Returns & Disputes
Can I return something I changed my mind about?
That depends on the seller's return policy, which should be stated in their listing. If no policy is stated, change-of-mind returns are not accepted by default. See our Returns Policy for full details.
What if the item I received isn't as described?
Contact the seller first through our messaging system and give them 48 hours to resolve the issue. If they don't respond or can't resolve it, open a Case by emailing support@buyhappythings.com with your order number, photos, and a description of the issue. We'll step in and determine a fair resolution.
How long do I have to open a Case?
Cases must be opened within 180 days of the transaction date.
Selling
How do I become a seller?
Create a free buyer account, then apply to become a seller from your account dashboard. The application takes a few minutes. Once approved, you can create your seller store and start listing immediately.
What does it cost to sell?
Listing items is free. We charge a 3.5% platform fee on the item price of each completed sale. There are no monthly fees and no fees for buyers. See our Seller Fees page for full details.
What can I sell?
BuyHappyThings.com is focused on model trains, locomotives, rolling stock, track, accessories, power supplies, and related hobby items. See our Content & Listing Policy for what is and isn't permitted.
How and when do I get paid?
Payouts are released 8 days after you mark an order as shipped. You can receive payouts via Stripe (direct bank deposit) or PayPal. Connect your payout method in Seller Settings. See our Seller Fees page for full details.
How does shipping work for sellers?
Buyers pay for shipping at checkout. You are reimbursed for the actual label cost when you fulfill the order. You can purchase a label through your seller dashboard or use your own carrier. Either way, enter the tracking number before marking the order as shipped. See our Seller Shipping Policy for obligations and best practices.
Do I need to collect sales tax?
No. BuyHappyThings.com collects and remits sales tax on your behalf as a marketplace facilitator in states that require it. See our Seller Fees page for information on 1099-K forms and your income tax obligations.
Accounts & Security
How do I reset my password?
Click "Forgot password" on the login page and enter your email address. You'll receive a reset link within a few minutes. Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive.
How do I enable two-factor authentication?
Go to your account settings and look for the Security section. You can enable TOTP 2FA (via an authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy) or register a passkey (Face ID, Touch ID, or Windows Hello) for passwordless login.
Can I have both a buyer and seller account?
You have one account that can function as both. Your buyer account and seller store are linked to the same login. Multiple separate accounts are not permitted.
How do I close my account?
Email support@buyhappythings.com from the address associated with your account. We'll process your request within 5 business days. Active orders must be completed before an account can be closed.
